For Donna Hendrickson, a dedicated volunteer at the Redwood Empire Food Bank, giving back started with a simple newsletter and blossomed into a deeply meaningful part of her life.
“I started contributing regularly during the pandemic,” she shared. “The newsletter I received made it clear just how much need there is in our community—and how the food bank has an immediate and important impact.” That initial spark of awareness eventually turned into a lasting commitment. “When I retired two years ago, the Redwood Empire Food Bank was the first place I thought of for volunteering.”
Among the many ways to get involved at Redwood Empire Food Bank, the Food Connections Market quickly became Donna’s favorite. “I really enjoy volunteering there,” she said. “Once you get a basic understanding of how it works, you can see what needs to be done and just get to it,” she laughed.
Donna has since become a rockstar volunteer in our Market, assisting the Food Connections Market Manager, Kim, in keeping everything running smoothly. From restocking food to helping organize and support other volunteers, Donna now spends 10–15 hours each week making sure the Market is in tip-top shape. Her dedication, leadership, and reliability have earned her the title of Super Volunteer—an honor shared by only a few at the Redwood Empire Food Bank, and it’s easy to see why.
Donna is also constantly inspired by the people around her. One standout moment? Watching a mother and daughter tackle two bins full of loose drinks. “I figured it would take us over a week to sort everything and put it into milk crates for display. But they emptied those bins in three hours! I kept them stocked with crates and helped them build the final display pallet. They were incredible. High fives all around!”
Making a Real Impact
Every shift, every crate, and every high five contributes to something bigger. “Our Partner Organization shoppers tell us all the time how much they appreciate when we take an extra minute to find what they need. I’m grateful for their work and their impact on our community—it reminds me how connected we all are.”
At the Redwood Empire Food Bank, we understand that ending hunger requires a community effort. That’s why we collaborate with an extensive network of partner organizations—including pantries, dining rooms, shelters, group homes, and childcare centers—who all get food to feed their participants from our Food Connections Market. These partner organizations are on the front lines every day, ensuring food reaches those who need it most and providing $24 million in vital support annually. Their commitment is key to strengthening our community’s safety net.
Volunteering has also opened Donna’s eyes to just how many different kinds of people show up to serve. “Retirees, parents and kids, students earning service hours, people with a day off—it’s heartwarming how many folks make community service a regular part of their lives.” And despite their different backgrounds, everyone shares the same goal. “We’re addressing a basic need in our community, and we know how important we are. We work hard, support each other, and have fun doing it.”
Looking Ahead
Donna is hopeful about the future, even in the face of challenges. “The federal funding cutbacks are tough, but this is work that we’re proud of. We’re going to do the very best we can to feed our neighbors,” she said. “Empathy is a strength.”
“I think we all have a duty to give back to our community, as we’re able,” Donna reflects. “I like to work, and in volunteering at the Redwood Empire Food Bank, I know my labor is needed, useful, and appreciated.”
Her advice to anyone considering volunteering? “Try a few different roles—there’s something for everyone. Whether you have two hours a month or unlimited hours a week, you’ll find a place where you feel comfortable and valued.” And when it comes to the volunteer experience? “Honestly, I’m happy with everything. The volunteer scheduling app is convenient, the ‘hour milestone’ pins are fun, and my boss says ‘thank you’ every day. Kim even brings me a cup of tea—bliss!” Small gestures, big impact.
